Background to this project
The work is a three dimensional painting, a floor standing box which the viewer is able to walk around. The artist, seated in the box, has literally become part of the work. The viewer is able to look at the artwork and simultaniously talk to it/the artist. The viewer is able to ask questions of the artwork, being heard through a vent in the side of the box. The artist speaks to the viewer through a hidden microphone and voice modulator pitched to sound like an alien.
The work is about the close connection between artist and artwork, looking at the alienation an artist can feel often on the fringe of society. Here the artist confronts this feeling portraying himself alienated and exposed as well as open to question. Two white mice have also become part of the work, playing obliviously in a box within the box.
Box components: Paint; wood; perspex; glass; aluminium.
Electrical components: Lights; microphone; voice modulator; speaker; fan.
Live Components: One artist; two mice.
Dimensions: 189x98x53cm.
Performance Duration: 2-3 Hours.
